Desmond asks Charlie and Hurley to come with him into the jungle. There, Locke and Sayid tell them that Eko is dead. Desmond acts like he is hearing something. He runs to the beach to find Claire drowning. Desmond rescues Claire.

Charlie and Hurley wanna find out how Desmond can see the future. They plan on getting him drunk with McCheneson's whiskey. They offer Desmond a drink of Whiskey and Desmond asks for the brand. When he finds out what it is he laughs and says sure. They three get drunk. Charlie then demands that Desmond tell them what happened to him when he turned the key. Desmond's says you don't wanna know as he chokes Charlie.

There is a quick recap of the events that occurred in the hatch at the end of Season 2. Desmond turns the key and then wakes up on the floor with red liquid all over him. We think it's blood but it is actually paint. Penny helps Desmond to his feet. He was painting their flat/pad when he fell off a ladder and was knocked out. Desmond goes to meet Mr. Widmore to ask for Penny's hand in marriage. Widmore brings out the same whiskey that Desmond laughed about with Charlie and Hurley. Widmore says that a swallow of this whiskey is worth more than what Desmond could make in a month and that Desmond is not worthy of his daughter.

We then see Desmond walking down the street really upset. Desmond sees Charlie who is playing guitar on the street for donations. Desmonds realizes that it is Charlie, but Charlie doesn't recognize Desmond. Desmond tries to remember where he knows Charlie from.

Desmond meets up with this physicist in a pub and asks him if time travel is possible. Desmond tries to convince the skeptical man by predicting events that he is sure will happen. But he is wrong. Different events occur. The man however, convinces Desmond to marry Penny.

Desmond goes to a jewerly store and asks for a ring. When the jeweler hands the ring to Desmond she demands it back. She tells Desmond that he is suppose to hand the ring back and have second doubt about the wedding. Then he breaks her heart and goes on a race around the world to prove his worth to his father. She says that he will then crash on the island and punch numbers into a computer. She says that if he doesn't do these things, everyone will die. This woman seems to know everything.

The two of them go for a walk and the woman notices a man with red shoes. She makes a comment about them being a bold. A couple minutes later the man in the red shoes dies after some scaffolding falls on him. Desmond asks the woman if she knew, and shes nods her head. She said it didn't matter if she told him because he would die by a taxi cab the next day, and fall in the shower and break his neck the next day. She says the universe has a way of course correcting.

The next day when Penny and Desmond are walking down the street a photographer asks them if they would like a photo taken of them. Penny chooses a harbour backdrop for the photo. After the photographer takes it, he hands it to Desmond who then realizes that it is the same photograph that he had on the island. Desmond realizes that he can't fight against the universe and decides to break up with Penny, and throws the engagement ring into the river.

After they break up he goes to a pub for a drink. All of a sudden the same events that he had predicted would happen in the pub with the physicist a few nights before, start to occur. He realizes that he does know the future, he just got the day wrong. After he comes to this conclusion he is knocked out by a bat swing that was intended for the bartender. He falls to the fall unconcious and wakes up back on the island, naked.

In this episode, we pick up right where the last one left off. This particular episode is Juliet-centric. We get to discover her past. At the beach, Charlie and Hurley go through Mr. Eko's belongings, and his personal stash of food. Meanwhile, back at the Others' camp, Jack has complete control over the Others, since Ben's life is in his hands. Kate and Sawyer escape from the men holding Sawyer at gunpoint.

Not in Portland was the seventh episode in Season 3 of Lost. It was the first episode that follows the season's opening "miniseason" and subsequent 12-week broadcasting hiatus. The broadcast of "Not in Portland" was preceded by a new recap episode titled "Lost Survivor Guide".
While Jack is in command as the fate of Ben's life rests in his hands, Kate and Sawyer help Alex in return for a boat, and Juliet makes a shocking decision that could endanger her standing with her people.

Während der verwirrte Eko sich mit Geistern seiner Vergangenheit auseinandersetzen muss, stellt Locke eine Gruppe zusammen, um zur "Pearl" Station zurückzugehen. Er hofft dort einen Computer zu finden, der ihnen vielleicht dabei helfen könnte Jack, Kate und Sawyer zu finden. Währenddessen weiß Jack nicht wem er noch trauen kann, als sich zwei der "Anderen" uneinig zu sein scheinen.

Twenty-three episodes will be produced in total. To limit the number of reruns, the first six episodes, that started October 4, 2006 and ended, with a mini-cliffhanger typical of the series, on November 8, will be followed by 13 weeks with no episodes at all, and continued with the next sixteen episodes, which will premiere in February 7, 2007.[1] In replacement of mid-season reruns, extended versions of the third season episodes will be run following the completion of the season.[2] Viewers are outraged at the planned stoppage, questioning why Lost producers don't simply make episodes more quickly.

The activities of The Others immediately prior to the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 are revealed, as they are shown to have been living in modern suburban houses in a previously unseen section of what appears to be the island. Their leader appears to be Henry Gale, whose uses the name Benjamin Linus among the others. He claims to have lived on the island his entire life, but he does have an awareness of the outside world, since it appears he can receive American television broadcasts.

Kate, Jack, and Sawyer appear to be imprisoned separately, in and around another DHARMA Initiative station, the Hydra. Ben tells Kate the next two weeks are going to be "very unpleasant." Jack is kept in a cell where he is interrogated by a woman who claims her name is Juliet. Sawyer is kept in a cage with a mechanical puzzle which dispenses fish biscuits and water, and he is only let out to do manual labour with Kate. The Others steal Desmond's sailboat, forcing Sayid, Sun and Jin to start the long journey back to the survivor camp. While the Others steal the boat, Sun shoots a female member of the Others, Colleen, whom we later discover to be Picket's wife.

Sawyer is taken to a dingy room, strapped down, and receives a needle to the chest. When he awakes, he is informed that a pacemaker has been installed and his heart rate must not exceed 140 beats per minute or his heart will explode. Colleen is brought back to the Others camp where Juliet attempts to save her life. When she cannot, she brings in Jack for help. On the way to the operating room, Jack notices x-rays of a tumor-infected spine. Due to a lack of necessary medical equipment, he is unable to save Colleen and she ultimately dies. Pickett, apparently furious over his wife Colleen's death, takes his anger out on Sawyer, beating him severely until Kate says she loves Sawyer. Kate later renounces this and claims she said this only to make Pickett stop beating Sawyer. Ben and some others take Sawyer on a walk up a mountain where they reveal to him that he doesn't have a pacemaker and that they are all actually on another island, located far offshore of the original island, thus making any escape attempt entirely futile. In captivity, Jack confronts Ben about the x-rays he saw in the operating theatre, which Ben admits are his. Ben also admits that his need for an operation is the main reason for Jack's captivity, and that the discovery of the x-rays has destroyed his plan to "turn" Jack. Juliet later secretly tells Jack that Ben is a liar and is very dangerous; Jack is told that he has to kill Ben during the surgery and "make it look like an accident". As Jack is operating on Ben, he cuts open his kidney sac and says he will let Ben die in one hour if Kate is not released. The episode ends with Jack telling Kate via walkie-talkie to run.

At the survivor's camp, Locke - who survived the implosion of the hatch - builds a "sweat lodge" in which he has a vision where Boone appears as his spiritual guide to reveal that he must save Eko. Locke and Charlie later find and rescue Eko from a polar bear's den. Desmond awakens naked in the jungle. Upon meeting with Hurley, who lends him some clothes, Desmond accidentally reveals to Hurley that he knows of a speech that Locke will give hours later. Back at the survivor camp, Hurley informs everyone that Jack, Sawyer and Kate were kidnapped by the Others. Locke promises the group that he will rescue their friends. Desmond appears to futher display prescience in anticipating a lightning strike at the survivors camp which he diverts by building a lightning rod.

Mr. Eko is visited by someone that looks like his brother, urging him to confess and wanders off into the jungle. Locke forms a group to journey to the Pearl hatch so as to communicate with the "Others". Since Locke allows anyone to accompany him, new character Nikki decides to join the search party and urges new character Paulo to join her. Locke, Desmond, Sayid, Nikki and Paulo head out in search of both the hatch and Eko. Locke's group eventually meets up with Eko before ultimately reaching the hatch, which is near the plane where the corpse they believe to be Eko's brother's body was burried. Eko looks inside and discovers that the body is missing. Locke's group enters the hatch, and inside they repair the various television monitors and see an eyepatch-wearing occupant in a yet-unknown hatch. Outside, Eko confronts the man that looks like his brother. The man wants Eko to confess his sins, however, Eko refuses, saying that he did the best with the life he was given, and that he feels no remorse for doing what he had to do to survive, to which Eko's brother responds saying, "You speak to me as if I was your brother." Eko's brother disappears and on chasing him Eko encounters the "smoke creature". It grabs hold of Eko, smashes him against trees, and slams him to the ground. On hearing the monster's distinctive sounds, Locke and his group rush out of the Pearl to find Eko crumpled on the ground. Locke rushes over to him and hears Eko's dying words. John tells his companions that these last words were "we're next" as he looks at Sayid.

In flashback, Sun, as a child, breaks a glass ballerina and blames it on the maid, who will be fired by her father, Mr. Paik.

Later, Sun as an adult is shown having an affair with Jae Lee, who attempts to give her a pearl necklace. She refuses, afraid that her husband would see it. Then, to her shame, Mr. Paik barges in and finds them in bed together. Mr. Paik later summons Sun's husband, Jin, telling him to "send a message" to Jae (implying that he is to be killed), saying that Jae has been "stealing." But when Jin ambushes and beats up Jae, he still cannot bring himself to kill, and instead orders Jae to leave the country. However, as Jin gets into his car, Jae's body lands on top, having either jumped or been thrown from the above window. The corpse's hand is seen clutching the pearl necklace. At Jae's funeral, Sun asks Mr. Paik if he told Jin about the affair, but he says that it was not his place to tell Jin.

On the sailboat, Sun, Jin, and Sayid worry that Jack's party has not shown up. They argue about what to do, with Sayid wanting to sail to a new location, and Jin refusing, but Sun goes against her husband to agree with Sayid. They find the Others' dock, where they build a signal fire to try and lure the Others into an ambush.

Meanwhile among the Others, Colleen reports to Ben that Sayid (referred to as "the Iraqi") has a boat, and Ben orders her to put together a team and capture it. Her team avoids Sayid's fire, and instead sneaks aboard the boat, where they encounter Sun below deck. Colleen calls Sun by her full name, telling her that the Others "are not the enemy", and that Sun will not shoot because she is a "good person", but Sun shoots Colleen in the abdomen and then escapes overboard.

Kate and Sawyer are forced to work, digging and carrying rocks. Alex Rousseau, hiding in the bushes, asks Kate about Karl. Sawyer creates a distraction by kissing Kate, and steals a rifle, but is forced to relinquish it when Juliet threatens to shoot Kate.

Back in their cages, Sawyer tells Kate what he learned about the fighting abilities of the various Others. He admits his real name is James. They start discussing plans to escape, not knowing Ben is monitoring their conversation via security camera.

Ben then visits Jack, telling him his real name, and that he has lived on the island all his life. He offers that if Jack cooperates, he can be sent home. Jack believes the Others are also stranded just as he is, but Ben informs him of the exact time and date of his plane crash and that 69 days have since passed (making the date November 29) and insists that they are in contact with the outside world. He shows this by citing various current events, such as the re-election of George W. Bush to the American presidency, the sudden death of Christopher Reeve and that the Boston Red Sox have won the 2004 World Series. Once Ben tells him about the Red Sox, Jack starts laughing and says that proves he is lying. Ben then proves it by playing a recording of the final play in the game as Jack watches in shock.

Review:
One of the best, most unusual, most emotionally intense episodes shown thus far.

From its dazzling opening, the tension is ratcheted up and the tone darkens to the final scenes, which hint that things will get far worse for our friends before they get better -- if they get better at all.

For all its range, the episode is really about Jack and the surprisingly ugly and dark corners of his psyche. Matthew Fox, who has been excellent throughout the show's run, really shines here. He is performance is quite powerful and extremely moving. If this episode is an indicator of where the series is headed this season, we're in for quite a ride.
